Team USA vs Team Canada

Sugar's "Show your American Spirit" Pick

Team USA (+1.5) vs Team Canada (WINNER!)

The moment is upon us folks.  Pick up a case of beer and a fifth of Jack, call your boss and tell him 'your chances of making it to work tomorrow aren't lookin too bright', call your kid's school and tell them your kids are American and hang up (they'll know what that means), and get to bed early because we have a big day ahead of us.  Tomorrow, at 11:45 am EST (8:45 am PST) gather your family in front of the flat screen, do a round of shots, chug a beer, and say the Pledge of Allegiance.  Grab the iPad out of your spoiled 8 year olds hands; the iPhone 5s out of your stuck up 14 year old daughters hands; and tell them they can have them back after TJ Oshie and the Boys-in-Blue kick some Canadian ass.

Four years ago, we were left sitting in heartbreaking disbelief. Sidney Crosby...The name itself just makes me cringe.  What would become known as "The Golden Goal" to Canadians, Sid the Kid sniped a shot past US tender and Michigan State graduate, Ryan Miller, from the bottom of the right circle in overtime to win the gold medal for Canada.  Americans have waited 4 years; Patrick Kane has won 2 Stanley Cups, we've seen the rise and fall of Tim Tebow, we taught eachother how to "dougie" while smoking e-cigarettes, 2 states have legalized marijauna, and President Obama got the ACA through congress; we experienced all of this without knowing for sure if this moment, this match up, would ever come.  In the waining moments it almost didn't happen: Latvia, of all teams, almost defeated Canada in the quarterfinal and in doing so would have ruined the potential glory this tournament contains.  Gold would mean nothing if the US didn't have to face Canada to get there.

The nation who invented the sport; mastered the sport; and has bread the sport into their culture; is unparalleled in the production of top notch hockey players.  They're a factory that specializes in producing NHL super stars.  Hockey is perhaps the only thing the ice patch to the north of us has consistently bested us in.

Those days are over.  The US has looked better in every aspect of the game in these Olympics.  From the puck drop against Slovakia they've appeared as if they are on a mission; as if they have a bone to pick.  After the Stars and Stripes defeated the home nation's team, Russia, people began to take them more seriously.  They've had scoring from all over their powerful offense.  All over except one person who has been suspiciously quiet on the stat sheets: Patrick Kane; Arguably the most talented and decorated player on the US squad. He has yet to score in these Olympics.  Kane will no longer be kept quiet folks and once the Buffalo native gets on the board: look. the. fuck. out.  The US has steam rolled great hockey teams (Slovakia 7-1, Slovenia 5-1, and Czech Rep. 5-2) without utilizing their most lethal scoring threat.  If, and I say "if" but I really mean "when", Kane starts putting the puck in the net, the US will be an unstoppable force.

Olympics, Patrick KaneTomorrow, Canadians will talk. They'll remind you about Vancouver. They'll ask you how many Americans play in the NHL. They'll give you the age old line, "it's Canada's sport."  When this happens, my fellow Americans, just smile and say "Vancouver was tough." and nothing more.  There are no words, no pictures, and no songs that can explain the heartbreak every single Canadian will feel tomorrow.  This is a country that debates and establishes rule changes in the sport of hockey in their federal government. Their elected officials use proposed changes to the rules of Canadian hockey as issues to run for office on.  No words will be necessary when the US sends those Canadian bastards packing to the Bronze medal game.

With this being the last Olympics that NHL players will be apart of; there is no better time for this game to happen. The hockey god's have given the US the opportunity to walk away with the last laugh.  Our very best on the ice with their very best, for the last time.  The loss will be a scar on every Canadian heart.  Vancouver hurt us, big time. But tomorrow we face redemption and after the good ol' fashioned American beat down we force upon them, there will no shot at redemption for Canada. Sure there will be the World Junior Championships every year and the Olympics (without professionals) every 4 years.  It won't be the same though.  It will never be our BEST against their BEST. Tomorrow is the day the best American hockey players defeat the best Canadian hockey players.  Don't be the asshole who misses out. And that case of beer I spoke of, yeah, Pabst Blue Ribbon.

The Cold War – Olympic Style

United States (+1) vs Russia (WINNER!)

Warm ups are officially over in Sochi, folks.  Tomorrow morning the US will take on the rival of all rivals; the ying to our yang, if you will.  Team Russia is not a team to be taken lightly.  Datsyuk, Malkin, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, and Semin are the heavyweights of this dynamic offense.  On top of an impressive roster the Russians are on home ice.  The fans will be loud and proud tomorrow morning; showing their team how much they want them to beat those damn Americans.  “Why is my pick the US?” you’re probably wondering. My response: Is there anything, and I mean A-NY-THING, that the United States does better than go into someone else’s country and FUCK shit up? The answer? HELL NO! Patty Kane and Co. will be ready to go tomorrow morning have no doubt.  The US is the pick here guys, trust me. Unless you’re a fuckin’ commie.

More Olympic Hockey!

Sugar’s Olympic Picks – lets win that money back

Sweden (-2) vs Switzerland (L)
When you’ve got a guy named  Johnny Oduya (sound it out) on the blue line, you know things are looking solid. For real though, Sweden’s defense is arguably the best out of the national teams.  Niklas Kronwall and Erik Karlsson are the power of the Swedish defense as well as two of the best, if not THE best, defensemen in the NHL.  Sweden only has one player who is not a member of an NHL club.  Switzerland on the other hand has only 9 NHL players, 2 of which are goalies.  Out of the remaining 7, we’re looking at 2 who are regular contributors to their respective NHL clubs.  These 2 are: Damien Brunner of the Devils, a natural goal scorer with average skating ability; and Nino Niederreiter of the Wild, besides the fact that his name is fucking awesome he has good passing ability and is a great skater.  Sweden will undoubtedly expose each and every hole in this slice of Swiss.  Trust me, take Sweden (-2) and it’ll “Oduya” just fine.

Sugar’s Pick: Sweden (-2)

Canada (-4.5) vs Austria (WINNER!)
In their Olympic debut today Team Canada looked discombobulated to say the least.  With Mike “I’m a fuckin’ psycho” Babcock behind the bench, expect to see a different Canadian team tomorrow.  Austria has 3 NHL players. Two of which belong to the trash bin of the NHL known as the New York Islanders.  The only name you might recognize is forward Thomas Vanek (Islanders).  The bottom line here is that even if Team Canada drops acid and dances to Russian house music all night at Ovechkin’s Castle (because you know he has a castle somewhere in Russia) Canada  is still going to light Austria up for 8+ goals.  Take the Canucks (-4.5)  and let me know if you got any info on Ovi’s castle situation.

Sugar’s Pick: Canada (-4.5)

Why NHL Player Count Matters
First off I would like to claim this statistic (if it hasn’t already been done) as my baby.  The NPC as I will be calling it from here on out, is a very straightforward statistic (none o’that algebraic nonsense here folks).  The NPC is a straight up count of how many NHL players a respective team has on their roster.  Why is this meaningful? Because the NHL is the fucking best; and if you need me to explain why this is important you need to find a new god damn hobby.  No this is not another “yeah ‘Murica all the way! We’re the fuckin’ best ever in the history of everything ever” line of nonsense.  Every serious hockey player in the world yearns for an NHL opportunity.  The NHL has scouts in every country that has hockey players and they are always looking for players good enough to play in “The Show”.  From a common sense standpoint; would you rather make $100,000 a year playing European professional hockey, or make a MINIMUM of $525,000 playing with the big boys in the NHL? In my picks I reference NPC a lot because these are the best players on earth. End of story.

Puck Picks: OLYMPIC STYLE!

Sugar’s “Share The Olympic Spirit” Puck Picks

United States (-1.5)  vs Slovakia (WINNER!)
After 4 years, the day has finally come boys and girls.  Patty Kane and the crew begin their quest to avenge the heart breaking, overtime, loss in Vancouver 4 years ago to that godforsaken ice patch north of us.  The road to American glory begins with Slovakia.  The Slovak’s scoring power starts and ends with NHL suitcase, Marian Hossa.  Other notable players are Detroit Red Wing’s: Tomas Tatar, Boston Bruin’s captain: Zdeno Chara, and Florida Panther’s forward: Tomas Kopecky. Nevertheless, the United States is loaded front to back with possible NHL HOF candidates. Lead by their captain, Zach Parise, the US is a force to be reckon with. You can count on Kane and Parise to lead the charge against Slovakia tomorrow morning in a dismembering of Slovakia.

Sugar’s Pick: United States (-1.5)

Canada vs Norway (OVER 6.5) (L)
What can one lonely hockey writer say to describe the strength of Team Canada? Not a whole lot my friends; not a whole lot.  Canada boasts a roster of five star NHL players at every single god damn position.  It’s like Vancouver all over again. That mother fucker, Sidney Crosby, will be wearing the “C” once again and you can be sure he will be sniping bar-down all day.  We are talking about a team that said Joe Thorton, Taylor Hall, Milan Lucic, and Tyle Seguin weren’t good enough. These Canadian bastards are going to walk into Sochi with their “eh’s” and their “a’boots” and act like they own the place. Long story short, Canada takes this game and the combined score will be 8+ goals.

Sugar’s Pick: OVER 6.5

Thursday Streakers

Streak for the Cash

On Wednesday we went 2-2 as we continue to be mediocre at streaking. As the great European philosopher French Montana once said, "ain't worried about nothin." So we're back with more picks for dat ass.

First pick: Men's Hockey - Group A: Who will win this matchup? (WINNER!)
Choice 1: Slovakia
Choice 2: United States

USA! USA! USA! That's all we got! Seriously though, take the US, they are going to win.

Second pick: Luge (Team Relay): What will be the event result? (L)
Choice 1: Canada Gold, Silver or Bronze medal
Choice 2: Any other result

Do not bet against Canada in a nonviolent sport which is held on ice, snow or maple syrup. It will not end well. Take Canada and you'll be on a W2.

Third pick: PGA Northern Trust Open (Pacific Palisades, CA): Which player will card the lower front 9 score? (Holes 1-9) (W)
Choice 1: Keegan Bradley or tie
Choice 2: Jason Duffner

OR TIE! That is the key here, when these guys tie with horrible scores, you will thank us. Bradley ftw.

Fourth pick: Brooklyn Nets @ Chicago Bulls: Who will win this matchup? (WINNER!)
Choice 1: Brooklyn Nets
Choice 2: Chicago Bulls

The Bulls have found some sort of identity since losing Derek Rose and trading Luol Deng. They still play great defense and they still have the best coach in the league. Take them in this low scoring game, Boozer is back!

Fourth pick: NCB: What will be the GAME RESULT?
Choice 1: San Diego wins or single digit loss
Choice 2: @ Saint Mary's win by double digits

Watch out for this barn burner! 2 WCC teams goin at it! Take San Diego, they might even win the way games are going this week! (L)

Olympic Ice Ball

Olympic Men's Hockey

SWEDEN vs CZECH REPUBLIC (OVER 4.5) (WINNER!)
The perennial powerhouse, Sweden, takes on an interesting Czech team today. The Czechs have a combination of old goats and youngin's this year. Sweden, like usual, is loaded from top to bottom. The Czechs have a shot to win but it's a slim one. Regardless, the combined score will most likely be 6+ goals. Take the over on this game.

Sugar's pick: OVER 4.5

Streak for the Cash

Staying Alive!
Yesterday: 2-1

Alright we were 2-1 yesterday! Not bad, but certainly not acceptable when it comes to this particular contest. Luckily our last pick of the night (Florida) was a winner. Here are our Streak for the Cash picks for February 12!

First pick: Men's Speed Skating (1000m): Who will win the gold medal? (L)
Choice 1: Shani Davis
Choice 2: Any other competitor

This isn't a fair pick. Shani Davis versus the field should be a no brainer. God knows how many other competitors there will be and Davis just finished 24th in the 500. But he's known as Mr. 1000! He's won gold in Turin! He won gold in Vancouver! And God Dammit, he's an American that is going to take the Gold in Sochi! Take Shani Davis! Take America!

Second Pick: Men's Hockey - Group C: Who will win this matchup? (WINNER!)
Choice 1: Sweden
Choice 2: Czech Republic

This pick will make up for the Shani Davis one. Take Sweden. Let's move on.

Third pick: English Premier League: What will be the match result? (WINNER!)

Choice 1: Manchester United Win or Draw

Choice 2: Arsenal Win

Always stick with your formula. Has Manchester United been struggling? Yes. Did they just lose or draw their last two games? Yes. Did they get destroyed by Chelsea who just let us down yesterday? OF COURSE! None of that matters because they have the draw on their side. Take Man U and watch Arsenal fall apart in this one!

Fourth pick: NCB (#1 Syracuse @ #25 Pittsburgh): Which PLAYER will SCORE MORE POINTS in the 1st Half? (L)

Choice 1: CJ Fair

Choice 2: Lamar Patterson

Both guys average around 17 ppg, but it's the Syracuse zone that should slow down Patterson tonight. Though he is solid from three, the perimeter quickness of Syracuse should make him penetrate to try and draw fouls where he shoots 79%. Meanwhile Fair puts up about 2 more shots per game and has put up big numbers against ranked teams. Let's just say this is a Fair-ly safe pick. Everybody take the CJ and enjoy it.

Fourth pick: NCB: Who will WIN this matchup? (Postponed)

Choice 1: Duke

Choice 2: North Carolina

This one is all on freshman bad ass Jabari Parker. Duke has been hot lately and nearly upset Syracuse the other night. Expect Parker and Rodney Hood to outmuscle the usual North Carolina "I'm kind of fat, but not really" post players and lead Duke to their third win in a row over NC. Take DUKE!

Streak for The Cash

Streaky Streakers
Yesterday: 2-3

So our picks yesterday sucked more than Andrew Wiggins' jump shot. No worries, we're moving on and you are too! Here's Tuesday's picks:

First pick: Men's Cross-Country Skiing (Sprint Free Finals): Which country will the gold medal winner represent? (WINNER!)
Choice 1: Norway or Sweden
Choice 2: Any other country

Are other countries even allowed to be in this event? Just take the two favorites like yesterday morning and you will be just fine.

Second pick: English Premier League: What will be the match result? (L)
Choice 1: Chelsea win by 2+ goals
Choice 2: West Bromwich win, draw or lose by 1

Streak is trying to trick you hear. They give you 3 options and you have no idea what a West Bromwich is, so you were probably going to take them! Wrong! Chelsea is ROLLIN right now. This will be an arse whoopin. Take Chelsea.

Third pick: NCB (#3 Florida @ Tennessee): Who will win this matchup? (WINNER)

Choice 1: Florida
Choice 2: Tennessee

This game might be closer than you'd think. Don't worry, Florida is awesome and they have 3 or 4 guys that can all score. This might be their year and a big win for all the streakers out there should wake up the rest of the nation. Take Florida and sweat this win out like Glen Davis in the Sahara.

And that's it! The rest of the games suck! If we feel like risking a little more and squeezing another pick in tomorrow, we will let you know. Until next time...

How to Win Streak for the Cash

It's been a solid two days and we have not mentioned America's past time! Not once! That's right, it's time to talk about ESPN's Streak for the Cash. It's like Jeopardy for people who aren't virgins; Gambling for people who eat Lunchables 3 times a day! It's the most American contest out there, and we'll be damned if we let some other assholes give you a solid L5 before we do!

So what is an ideal day in the life of a modern Streaker? Well, it starts with a solid night of preparation! Make sure you text all your bros to determine what the best pick is for the next morning. It doesn't matter if you are on a W16, you HAVE to make a pick on the first event of the day. After that first pick hits, the streak is on. Now you will have 2-4 early afternoon choices. These will range from shitty tennis matches to soccer games in the middle of some God forsaken war zone. Just take a soccer match that has "Win or Draw" because, face it, no one knows shit about PK Daåkkénsteinener or who their famed striker Il Dávidovic is. Besides, as American's we know most soccer games end 0-0 anyways, right?

Now you've got something going! Try to slide in a quick hitter for the afternoon. Something like "Paul George will dick slap under/over 8 people in the first half." That way, you're not sitting around for 3 hours waiting for a game to end. Grab the dick slaps and move on to your last pick of the night!

It's all a big cycle. With today's picks, you will have no problem beating the hell out of all the wannabe ESPN research analysts out there and hopping on your horse the next morning for 4-5 more.

Streak for the Cash, February 10, 2014

First pick: Men's Speed Skating (500m): Who will win the Gold Medal? (WINNER)
Choice 1: Mo Tae-Bum (KOR) or Michael Mulder (NED)
Choice 2: Any other competitor

Look, we don't know the first thing about speed skating and that's fine. What we do know is, this is the Olympics, and generally, there are always 1-3 competitors that are far beyond the rest of the field. We also know that there will be a giant pile up, blood everywhere and lots of tears. So take the guy whose name sounds like a delicious drink and the very plain white man! W1

Second pick: Greek Super League (L)
Choice 1: Panionios Win or Draw
Choice 2: Aris Salonika

Fifa funnyAssuming the speed skating is done in 4 hours, it's time to move on to the Greek Super League! That's right, this isn't that pussy ass Greek Mediocre at Best League, you're rollin with the big dawgs now! As usual, take the win and the draw, crank one out and come back when you have the W2 (unless you actually watch the Greek Super League...then please do enjoy the game)

Third pick: English Championship (L)
Choice 1: Athletic Bilbao Win
Choice 2: Celta Vigo Win or Draw

You're betting against the Hobbit, but you know the drill, Win or Draw. Take Celta.

Fourth pick: NCB (Miami (FL) @ Florida State): How many players will score 5 or More points in the 1st Half? (Winner)
Choice 1: 6 or fewer
Choice 2: 7 or more

These two squads aren't exactly run & gun, get buckets all day erry day teams. 4 guys on the floor average double figures in points (all under 15). Take 6 or fewer and don't bother watching this boring ass game.

Final pick: NCB: Kansas @ Kansas St. (L)
Choice 1: Kansas

Choice 2: Kansas St.

Take the team that has the lottery picks. This will be a good game, but with Marvin Williams 2.0 (Wiggins) and first round bust Joel Embiid leading the way for Kansas, this one should be easy.

There you have it! A W5 to start your week. Remember, if you win the cash, you have to take us all to Vegas.

Get Pucked! Olympic Edition

Olympic Hockey

The Olympics are upon us and the NHL is on hiatus.  In the world of hockey betting, we are faced with unfamiliar and obscure lines: Women’s Olympic Hockey lines.  Have no fear though, fellow sports enthusiasts, the Puck Pick of the Day is clearly the fine women of Sweden (-3.5) as they take on Japan.  You can be sure this squad, a model of European finesse style, will have no issues dismantling the choppy style the Japanese women have been known to play.  The Swedish women’s team is typically known as the fourth best national team in the world behind Canada, the US, and Finland.  The Swedes shouldn't have any problems besting this Japanese squad by 5 or more goals.
Puck Pick of the Day: Sweden (-3.5) vs Japan (L)
