NHL Playoff Picks

NHL Friday
New York @ Pittsburgh (-1.5; +165) (L)
Fleury PlayoffsYep, you read that right; If you aren’t feelin’ yourself today then this pick has nothing for you.  I know you’re wondering, “why is this asshole taking the Pens on the spread?”  Well, the Blue Shirts haven’t really shown shit this entire series.  They snuck out a win in game 1 and followed that up by getting shut out for 2 straight playoff games.  The Pens blew them the fuck out last game in MSG.  As much as I hate admitting it, Pittsburgh is getting scary at.. well.. a scary time.  Their goaltender (Fleury) has silenced the fuck out of his critics.  The Penguins are looking to cruise on to the Eastern Conference Finals and wait for whoever is left standing after the bloodbath between Montreal and Boston unfolds.  Peace out NYC.

New York @ Pittsburgh (OVER 5; -125) (WINNER!)
If you’ve watched the games so far in this series it is safe to say that the Penguins have progressively gotten better each game.  The Pens should bury the Rangers tonight at home and feed off the crowd. The Rangers will give it all they’ve got since it’s do or die, so the over is a safe bet.

First Period Money Line
New York @ Pittsburgh (-150) (L)
Penguins will take control right from the start.  They should definitely have a lead after 1 period.

Chicago (-1.5;+220) @ Minnesota (L)
Minnesota had their fun in game 3.  They won one for the home crowd and the hockey loving state of Minnesota.  Now it’s time for the Stanley Cup Playoffs to continue and for Chicago to stomp the Wild into the fucking ground.  From my perspective, Chicago is so much better than Minnesota it’s comical. They’re better coached, they have better players, they have better goaltending, and if that’s not enough, they’ve won 2 of the last 4 Stanley Cups.  This team is the defending Stanley Cup Champions; they know how to get it done.  Their stars are in the prime of their career and if they win the cup for the second year in a row (3 out of the last 5) they will go down in NHL history as a dynasty.  Sorry Minnesota, you had a good run.

Chicago @ Minnesota (UNDER 5; EVEN) (L)
I’m expecting a nice 3-0 beat down by the Hawks.  I don’t think it will get all crazy with tons of goals and shit.  Just a solid, decisive “you don’t fuckin belong on the ice with us”, beat down. One of those games where all the Wild fans go home and know they don’t have a chance in game 5 in Chi Town.

First Period OVER/UNDER (L)
Chicago @ Minnesota (UNDER 1.5;-140)

Nothing special here; I expect a 1 goal first period.

Sugar's Puck Picks

Pittsburgh @ New York (-110) (WINNER!)
Rangers at home with the series essentially on the line; I'm not about to bet on the Pens in this situation. I think the Rangers will break through and tie the series.

Will either team score in the first 10 minutes?
-YES (-125) (WINNER!)
The Rangers have been shut down completely on offense for 2 straight games. I expect them to score early tonight and set the tone.

NHL Top 10

Top 10 Hands in the NHL

There are few things in this world more exciting than a well-executed dangle.  Any player that played a year of high school hockey can go out and break a couple ankles in drop in, but very few have what it takes to dangle the best hockey players in the world.  What makes one a good dangler you ask?  Allow me to break it down for you.  I’ve come up with an airtight ranking system composed of 5 sub categories, each rated on a 1-10 scale with 10 being highest:

  • Smoothness – Does the player look like they’re out in the yard chopping wood? Smoothness is the  player’s ability (or inability) to seamlessly and effortlessly maneuver the puck.  If dangling is art then smoothness is the steady brush stroke.
  • Quickness – Does time slow down for the player?  Quickness is the speed of the hands.  With poke checks coming from virtually every direction in the NHL, danglers must be able rapidly move the puck out of harm’s way.
  • Awareness – Are the dangles performed at the most opportune times?  Nobody likes that guy that tries to go end to end every time they get the puck.  There is a time and a place for dangling, especially in the NHL.  Awareness is a player’s ability to use their skills at the moments when it is called for.  If you’re the last guy back with the puck it’s probably not a good idea to try stickhandling through 3 guys.
  • Creativity – How often does the player make you say “holy shit”?  Danglers are like comics, the best ones have original, never before seen, material.  Creativity is a player’s ability to broaden the horizons of the hockey world when it comes to dirty dangles.
  • X-Factor – How does it all come together for the player?  The best danglers have an intangible aspect to their style that makes them unique.  You can list off all the traits that make them a great player but at the end of the day there is still some amount of “x-factor” that makes them one of the best.  The X-Factor is a player’s ability to make big things happen when it is needed most.
#1
Pavel Datsyuk – Detroit Red Wings
Smoothness10  Quickness9  Awareness9  Creativity10  X-Factor10
Datsyuk dangle TOTAL: 48/50
Datsyuk has established himself as the model for all dangler comparisons.  He’s smooth, quick, incomparably creative, and he rarely gets caught dangling at the wrong time.  His style and moves have made an impact on hockey at all levels of play.

#2
Sidney Crosby – Pittsburgh Penguins
Smoothness8  Quickness9  Awareness10  Creativity7  X-Factor10
TOTAL: 44/50
Sid the Kid has shown he can dangle with the best.  His hands are fast and his timing is impeccable.  He uses his dangling abilities to create scoring opportunities for everyone on the ice with him.

#3
Alex Ovechkin – Washington Capitals
Smoothness7  Quickness9  Awareness7  Creativity10  X-Factor10
TOTAL: 43/50
Ovi isn’t so much a smooth dangler but he sure can make guys look like they are standing still.  His explosiveness and tenacity, compounded with his hand speed and world class shot, are a lethal scoring combination.  Sometimes he tries to do too much on his own but you can’t argue a whole lot when he’s scoring 50 goals a season.

#4
Patrick Kane – Chicago Blackhawks
Smoothness7  Quickness10  Awareness7  Creativity9  X-Factor9
Patty kane stick
TOTAL: 42/50
Patty Kane can make any NHL player look stupid.  His hands are probably the quickest in the world.  His ego sometimes gets in the way and shows itself when he attempts dangling around 3 guys when he has teammates wide open.  Nevertheless, Kane is an elite dangler hands down.

#5
Evgeni Malkin – Pittsburgh Penguins
Smoothness8  Quickness7  Awareness8  Creativity9  X-Factor9
TOTAL: 41/50
Sometimes people forget that the Penguins have Malkin in their lineup because of the shadow cast by Crosby.  Malkin is an elite Russian goal scorer with hands that can fool even the best defensemen.  He’s a smooth handler with a lot of creativity and the rare ability to completely take over a game.

#6
TJ Oshie – Saint Louis Blues
Smoothness7  Quickness9  Awareness8  Creativity8  X-Factor8
TOTAL: 40/50
Oshie and Crosby are actually a lot alike when it comes to their dangle game.  Both players have extremely fast hands and use their explosive lateral movement to gain space between them and defenders.  Oshie is an elite goal scorer that can dangle with the best.

#7
Matt Duchene – Colorado Avalance
Smoothness8  Quickness8  Awareness8  Creativity8  X-Factor8
TOTAL: 40/50
The youngest of the Top 10, Duchene’s dangling abilities are far beyond his years.  He has the ability to change a game by himself with his speed, hands, and scoring touch.  He is already one of the best scorers in the league and is only going to get better.

#8
Ryan Getzlaf – Anaheim Ducks
Smoothness7  Quickness8  Awareness9  Creativity7  X-Factor9
TOTAL: 40/50
Getzlaf gifGetzlaf is a freak.  He’s 6’4” tall and can handle the puck like he’s 5’9”. His reach is insane, his toughness is unparalleled, and his balance is off the charts.  He is nearly impossible to take the puck away from.  The quickness at which he can move his large frame have allowed him to become one of the best scorers and danglers in the game today.

  #9
Marion Hossa  – Chicago Blackhawks
Smoothness8  Quickness8  Awareness6  Creativity9  X-Factor8
TOTAL: 39/50
Even in his older years Hossa can still break some ankles. In his prime, Hossa took over games with his speed, size, and hands. He doesn't have the ability to take over a game anymore but his hands are still world class nonetheless.

#10
Joe Thorton – San Jose Sharks
Smoothness7  Quickness7  Awareness8  Creativity8  X-Factor7
TOTAL: 37/50
Joe Thorton is basically an older Ryan Getzlaf.  He’s huge yet possesses great balance and agility.  He is a bit older now but he’s still got it.  He has a great combination of toughness and smoothness.  He can dangle with the best of them.

Honorable Mentions:
Nickolas Backstrom, Patrick Marleau, Paul Stastny, Sam Gagner, Taylor Hall, John Tavares, Daniel Briere, Patrick Sharp, RJ Umberger, Eric Staal, Rick Nash, Martin St. Louis, Claude Giroux, Alex Hemsky and David Krejci

NHL Playoff Puck Picks

Sugar's Whistlin' Wednesday Picks

Pittsburgh (-135) @ Columbus (L)
The Pens scored 3 straight late last game to steal one on the road. I don't expect Pittsburgh to allow tonight's game to come to that point. Expect Pittsburgh to win by 2 or more.
Patrick Kane Goal
Anaheim (-105) @ Dallas (L)
Dallas got their first playoff win in basically forever the other night. Now that's out of the way I expect things to right themselves within the universe and the Ducks to destroy the Stars. Anaheim is so much better on paper and on the ice it's not worth discussing.

Saint Louis @ Chicago (-145) (WINNER!)
The Hawks got into the heads of the Blues players and fans with the "wakey, wakey Backes" fiasco.  The fact that Saint Louis fans and players alike are a bunch of cry baby bitches has been exposed. A team with the likes of Patrick Kane will not allow that to go to waste. Look for the Hawks to continue chirping the Blues effectively taking them off their game and evening the series for Chicago.

NHL Saturday!

Saturday’s  NHL Picks.

There is officially 2 days left in the regular season.  As I stated yesterday, home ice advantage is on the line tonight for most of the playoff teams.  The teams that have not made playoffs are just hoping to get a win at home to finish out what can only be described as a failure of a season.
Buffalo @ Boston (-1.5; -140) (WINNER!)
The only reason Buffalo might make a game of this is if the Bruins sit some of their best players to get ready for playoffs.  The thing with Boston though, and what makes them so good, is they don’t rely on any one particular player.  They have Bergeron and Marchand up front with Rask in net but those guys don’t carry the weight that Steven Stamkos or Ryan Miller does.  I expect this to be a good ole fashioned Boston beatdown for the Sabers.

Philadelphia @ Pittsburgh (OVER 5.5) (WINNER!)
Any time these 2 teams faceoff it is nothing less than a war on ice.  People often forget how much these 2 clubs despise each other.  Believe it or not, Philly has the better record in Pittsburgh going 7-3 in the last 3 seasons on the Pens’ home ice.  One thing that you can count on tonight is a high scoring game.  Look for a hard fought 5-4 or 6-4 game tonight.

NY Rangers @ Montreal (-1.5; +225) (L)
Subban hit
This is a ballsy pick but I think it will pay off.  If you don’t have your boner pants on today maybe just take the money line tonight (Montreal -130) and choose your wardrobe more carefully next time. Montreal has been money at home against the Rangers this season.  I don’t expect any different tonight.  PK Subban will probably hit someone through the glass and Pacioretty will probably snipe one or two bar down.

Toronto @ Ottawa (-140) (WINNER!)
The Leafs are bad.  I mean really bad.  A couple weeks ago they were right there fighting with Detroit and Columbus for the wild card spots.  Then decided they would rather hit the links instead of getting in on some playoff hockey.  They lost to Winnipeg, Tampa, and most recently Florida in the 3 game skid they’re riding heading into tonight.  Look for the Sens to roll at home and give their fans something to cheer for.

Columbus (-135) @ Florida (WINNER!)
Columbus desperately wants these 2 points.  A win tonight will spare them from facing Boston in the first round.  As I’ve stated before: no one wants to take on Boston in the first round.  Florida is an easy 2 points for any playoff team these days.

Vancouver (-115) @ Edmonton (L)
The Oilers have only won 28 games this year.  I don’t see any reason why tonight will be the big 29.  In fact I predict they’re going to have to wait until about the second week of next season for their next win.  You could write a book on why Vancouver sucks dick this year; actually probably a seven book series.  They have all the talent in the world at every position yet their season is one to be forgotten. Tortorella has to be fearful for his job right now.  Regardless, Vancouver rolls on the road in the Oil City tonight and sends the Oilers to the golf course trying to forget the past 5 years.

Anaheim (+105) @ Los Angeles (WINNER!)
Here’s another instate rivalry for ya.  This boils down to the Birdemic possessing the most potent offense in the league.  They need this win to secure the 1st seed in the West and I don’t know if this Anaheim team can be stopped when they want it.  Look for Perry to put one five hole and Getzlaf to leave you wondering how that big of a fucking guy can move that fast.

NHL Picks

Sugar’s (drunk) NHL Picks

The fuck you complainin’ about
Washington +167 @ Boston (WINNER!)
Boston is coming off a loss to Buffalo.. yeah the Sabers.  Ovi will be looking to snipe since he took pretty much all of the blame for Russia’s embarrassment in the Olympics.  As Jack Nicholson says “YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH” .. truth is the caps are going to run the show against the boys in Boston.  Look out as Ovi and Backstrom go to work and defeat Boston.
Sugar’s Pick: Washington +167

Florida @ Columbus (UNDER 5.5) (L)
Washington CapitalsHonestly, get your bets in now because this line could drop to OVER/UNDER 2.5 by tonight.  These teams are fucking terrible.  Look for the Panthers to “roll” against Columbus while both teams try to figure out what sport it is they are actually trying to play.  Florida averages 2.3 goals/game while Columbus averages a nice 2.8 goals/game.  Again, these teams are fucking terrible; I really can’t stress that enough here guys.
Sugar’s Pick: UNDER 5.5

Pittsburgh @ Chicago (-130) (WINNER!)
Two of the NHL’s best clubs meet in a potential Stanley Cup final match up.  The game is in Chicago so look for Chi town to roll over the Pens.  Chicago has much more “swag” with P. Kane and Toews on the ice than the Penguins could really ever even hope for.  Crosby and Co. are a bunch of pussies and will most likely fall victim to the assault that Toews’ team will ensue upon them.  I would like to add that Crosby is a little bitch.  Look for him to be complaining to the refs half the game while Toews and Kane snipe geno after geno on which ever goalie the Pens decide to start tomorrow night.
Sugar’s Pick: Chicago -130

UPSET PICKS
NY Rangers (+1.5) @ Philadelphia (L)
What this pick boils down to is my personal hatred of the Flyers.  They always think they have “the” team when in reality they ain’t got shit and never had shit.  In ’97 they thought they were going to roll through Detroit in the finals.  History will tell you they got beat; actually swept. New York has the better offense and better goaltending.  Look for Lunqvist to lock it down while the Rangers do work on the Flyers.  Philadelphia fucked up when they removed Peter Laviolette from behind the bench.  They won’t go anywhere in the playoffs and they sure as fuck won’t be beating the Rangers tonight.
Sugar’s Pick: Rangers +1.5

Tampa Bay (+115) @ Dallas (WINNER!)
I really hate the Dallas Stars; Sorry Modano.  The glory days are over for the Stars and Jamie Benn ain’t no fuckin’ captain.  Tampa has a solid team and they are going to head into Dallas and come away with a win.  It might be a 5 goal dismantling or it might be a 3-2 OT win; I don’t fuckin know.  But it’ll be a win, I can tell ya that.  Dallas loses this game that’s all I know for sure.

Sugar’s Pick: Tampa +115
