Turning Tricks for the Tourney!!

B Catz is back bringing the noise with a fresh batch of hot tournament picks for you gambling fiends. Initially I didn't think I would watch more than 22 total minutes of this years installment due to a boring ass season and lack of NBA prospects participating...well boy howdy was I wrong. This has been a fantastic tournament!! Tons of great games, classic shots and incredible performances and we are only at the round of sixteen!! So let's roll up our sleeves and get our hands elbow deep in some tourney picks!

MIA +4 vs NOVA

Personally I've never been a fan of Villanova. I know all the experts argue that this years Nova team is different than the dozen or so teams they've had previously that always seem to underperform come tourney time.  They did a lot to dispel that notion in their first two contests definitely, but as they say, the third time is the charm. This will be a classic Nova letdown game as Miami comes out of the gates hot led by their Puerto Rican guards (I've never actually watched them, I just assume) and do just enough to secure a victory in the second half.

OKLA -2.5 vs TEXAS A &M

The comeback by A and M the other night was absolutely spectacular and a definite tournament classic. So why would I bet against a team that was good enough to come back from 12 down with 44 seconds left?? Because it happened against Northern Iowa and they shouldn't have been in the spot in the first place. You know who isn't going to let them come back from a 12 point deficit late in the game? Player of the year and future NBA player Buddy Hield and his teammates. This game won't even be competitive, Oklahoma wins by 15.

MARYLAND +5 vs KANSAS

Finally our contrarian pick of the day.  It's hard to talk yourself in to this hot and cold Maryland team especially against such a deep Kansas squad, and apparently the public bettors agree. 84% of bets have been placed on Kansas so far and the spread was hammered in favor of Kansas opening at -2 and moving all the way to -5. Still like Kansas to win the game in the end, but a tie game with 30 seconds left and Melo Tremble calling for an iso at the top of the key is definitely going to make the Jayhawk faithful nervous.

Saturday sits 2 days away.  Before you start making bets on the games let’s take a look at some futures and some props for this upcoming weekend.  I picked what I think are the best lines for making some money.  Of course the odds are that Kentucky rolls through and wins it all.  That outcome won’t give you much return on a bet though.  So here are some highly possible alternatives to the common narrative. 

Exact Finals Matchup 

Wisconsin vs Duke 

The more time I think about it, the more confident I am that Wisconsin is destined to erase the zero in Kentucky’s loss column.  This Badgers team lost in a heartbreaking manner last year in the final four to Kentucky.  The teams core group of players stayed at school another year with one mission: Win the championship they felt they deserved.  A championship for Wisconsin wouldn’t feel right if they didn’t have to go through Kentucky to get there.  Saturday night’s game has been a year in the making for the Badgers.  This veteran loaded squad, with memories of a year ago fresh in their minds, will be the ones to take down Kentucky.  This line offers a big payout for the better looking to take a risk but not get too crazy.  Duke wins over the Spartans and the cinderella run comes to an end for Tom Izzo’s team.

Line: +300

Wisconsin vs Michigan State

If you feel like going big or going home look no further.  An all B1G final?  Could it actually happen?  Well, for Michigan State it’s probably the only shot they have at winning this thing.  As for the chances of these 2 B1G teams defeating the 2 most storied and successful college basketball programs in the country on the same day.. well it’s lofty I’ll just say that.  But with a line like this it’s hard to ignore.  If you’re feeling lucky you might as well put it to the test.

Odds to Win Tournament MOP

Karl Anthony Towns (Kentucky)

The most talked about player on the most talked about team.  This is either a sure thing or just low hanging fruit tempting you with seemingly free money.  If you think Kentucky is going to win it all then I this is who you should be putting your money on.  Also a line to throw something on just so you don’t miss out if Kentucky dominates all the way through.

Line: 3/1

Jahlil Okafor & Justice Winslow (Duke)

I threw these two together because their odds are the same and it could really go either way.  Personally, if Duke wins I think it will be largely credited to Winslow stepping up huge in the tournament.  He’s opened a door for himself over the past 2 games to make a case for MOP.  The attention is on after he averaged 18.5 pts/gm over Duke’s last 2 games.  The case for Okafor is easy to make though.  If they get through Michigan State it will most likely come as a result of Okafor shutting down Michigan State’s X-factor Branden Dawson.  Both teams they could face in the finals would be great tests for Okafor.

Line: 5/1 

Sam Dekker (Wisconsin)

All season long Frank Kaminsky and Wisconsin have been synonymous with each other in the media.  Kaminsky’s player of the year quality campaign stole most of the spot light from his Badger teammates.  Dekker has emerged as a lethal scorer in this tournament.  Just ask Arizona.  Dekker put up a career high 27 points against Arizona and went 5/5 from 3 in the 2nd half.  He’s clutch and he’s confident.  If Wisconsin wins this don’t be surprised if this guy gets MOP.

Travis Trice (Michigan State)

The senior guard on the Spartans has been nothing short of incredible through 4 games in the tournament.  Averaging just under 20 points a game and shooting lights out from behind the arc, particularly late in games.  If you think Michigan State is going to win it all then you know the only way that happens is if Trice continues to play out of his mind.  

Line: 10/1

Round 1 Picks

Northeastern (+12.5) vs. Norte Dame

When this game tips off we could seriously have more white dudes out there than a BYU/Harvard matchup in Provo! But, like all white dudes, these boys can shoot the lights out and think "defense" is just Spanish for "the fence". Look for NE to get hot from beyond the arc and put a little scare in ND, before the Irish pull away to win by 9-11.

GA state (+9) vs. Baylor

Texas Southern (+23) vs. Zona

Two teams that are much better than their seed would lead you to believe. Getting 23 points for Texas Southern in this game, is like Kate Upton walking up to you at bar asking if you live nearby and like old-fashioneds...in other words its a really good thing that will probably never happen in your lifetime. Not quite ready to go all the way on either of these and predict a straight up upset, but these games are going to be a lot closer than the general public expects them to.

Butler (+1.5) vs. Texas

VCU (+4) vs. Ohio State

Two small schools going up against established programs with big names that are favored purely on reputation and history, rather than the current state of affairs. Both Butler and VCU are tournament veterans that have gone on deep runs in recent years. These two teams know how to win, and don't care about the name on the front of the jersey. Don't be surprised if both of these teams win in these situations, and especially don't be shocked when Texas gets blown out because they are garbage.

1. Multiple high seeds will fall in the first round.

  Eastern Washington will absolutely beat Georgetown in Portland! GTown is notoriously overrated year after year and its going to take a loss to a team like this to finally get that across to the selection committee. Throw in the fact that the Hoyas have to travel across the US and Eastern is a mere 5 hour drive down to Rip City. Georgia State will absolutely beat Baylor!! 

  G-State is a solid ass squad going against a very overrated (based on seeding) Baylor team. Plus State has Kevin Ware who is known for having the grossest injury ever on live TV which means he has to be due for some good luck right?? Give the man a bone already!! Oh....shit that was gross. State's gonna win though. 

  BUT THE GRANDDADDY UPSET OF THEM ALL!! Arizona will lose in the first round to Texas Southern!! Southern has already played a brutal schedule (and got rocked a bunch) that prepared them for the crucible that is the NCAA tournament. Throw in huge road wins against Michigan State (I know, its not much) and Kansas State and you have a team that is primed for the upset!! Throw some serious money on this one and show off to your friends because this one is gonna be a shocker!!

2. Gonzaga will make the championship game!!!

Sure this pick is biased as shit because I happen to be an alum of this prestigious institution (I have the credit score to prove it). But this is easily Few's best team ever and first legitimate team that could actually contend for a national championship. Sure other teams might have had higher potential draft picks and what not, but this one is tall, deep and very talented. Now all bets are off once they get in to the final, especially because most likely they will play Kentucky, but its a huge step for this program even making one. Zags are going to open up a few eyes this tourney, don't be surprised if they get a couple of lucky bounces along the way, this is a team of destiny. 

3. NOT A single 12 seed will beat a 5!

This has become an annual tradition where as soon as the brackets are released people are picking what 12 seed (or seeds) will upset a 5 because it always happens right?? Well not this year. Sure people will try and sell you on Stephen F Austin beating Utah or maybe Buffalo over WVU gets your solider to half-salute? Well put it back in your pants because they ain't happening. This class of five seeds is appropriately rated, whereas all of the 12's would have trouble against 14's. Don't fall for the classic 5/12 trap this year because you will be bustin' a lot of brackets. For what feels like the first time in history, a 5 seed will not lose to a 12. 

Kentucky Will Not Win the Tournament

By now most of you have filled out 10-100 brackets for the Men's NCAA Tournament and 0 for the women's tournament (you feel bad now don't you?). The biggest theme in college basketball this year has been Kentucky dominating the shit out of everyone. The Wildcats have technically dominated this season, but I think when you take a deep dive into this Kentucky team you can find some key weaknesses. Will Kentucky win this tournament? Probably, but that's not as fun and would never get on such scripted shows as First Take or WWE. So here are three reasons to bet against Kentucky in this year's tournament. 

1. They don't have a tournament "star"

The beginning of each tournament is always carried by star players. Whether it be Jimmer Fredette, Kemba Walker, Steph Curry, Kawhi Leonard, Derrick Williams, Adreian Payne, or whatever future NBA player; the Cats don't have it! Do they have NBA players? Oh fuck yeah, absolutely. Towns is and Cauley-Stein will be top 10 picks,  but they are not dominant stars! Can they block shots and rebound? Yeah! They're damn near 7 feet tall playing against a bunch of 19 year olds! What the fuck would you expect? Don't get me started on the Harrisons. They came alive last tournament to the surprise of yours truly, but they are not the typical bad ass Calipari-caliber guards we have grown to see. They are NBA role players AT BEST, and not the type of "take over the game " guards you need in a tournament. Kentucky may be unselfish and talented across the board, but they don't have an ultra talented player that will own a tournament moment and that's a big problem.

2. Too much pressure from all angles

They went all out during the season and kept their streak intact. This is a phenomenal feat in itself and should be applauded. The problem is, the pressure has been mounting for a while. They have shown weakness throughout the season and, to their credit, they were able to overcome it. The problem is, the tournament is a different animal! Teams are literally fighting for their basketball lives! Some of these dudes are going to graduate and start working at T-Mobile the next week! Everyone wants to be the team to beat Kentucky and they will throw every trick in the book at the Wildcats until they crack. By the Sweet 16 and Elite 8, the 'Tucky will be mentally and physically drained and vulnerable. 

3. Their offense isn't good enough

So this one is probably the most offensive to Coach Cal and the 'Cats. They finished 29th in ppg at 74.9 this year which is not bad at all. The problem is, they don't have one thing they do at an elite level, nor do they have an elite scorer. Well, I guess they do have one thing going for them: Elite Size. Not sure if that is a thing or not, but it is really what they are best at. They are also 42nd in assists per game, probably due to the Harrison's lack of talent. They will probably put 120 on their first opponent, but when they get deeper in the tourney, shit's not going to be so easy. ESPECIALLY if teams pack the paint and hope for a bad shooting day.

College Basketball & NHL Sunday!

NCAAM & NHL Sunday - Stranded by American Airlines

While I sit stranded at the Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix I figured I might as well get back on the horse and make some picks.  My American Airlines flight was canceled because apparently they wait until shit starts literally falling apart before they make repairs.  Think twice before you book with AA that's all I have to say about that.  They didn't show even the slightest hint of remorse for leaving me stranded in an airport for 7 and a half hours and forcing me to arrive at my destination 7 hours later than expected.  Thanks guys.  But let's do some picks...

Michigan State +7.5 vs Wisconsin

It's March 15th and as always the Michigan State Spartans are playing their best basketball of the year.  Tom Izzo's team completed a comeback for the ages against an 8th ranked Maryland team yesterday afternoon to move on to the Big10 championship.  Today they meet a familiar foe from Wisconsin.  It's no secret the Badgers are one of the nation's best teams this year with one of the nation's best players (Kaminsky).  A month ago I wouldn't have given Sparty a chance against the Badgers;  but that was a month ago and now its March.  Tom Izzo has built a reputation over his career as being the guy in March.  How good is Izzo when it comes to this time of year?  His record in elimination games in the month of March is 70-28.  SEVENTY AND TWENTY-EIGHT. I'm not a mathematician but that's absolutely fucking insane.  Wisconsin is one of the nations best and one of the toughest teams to defend.  I expect this game to be a battle with Wisconsin slipping away with a narrow victory while the Spartans cover.  

UCONN +3.5 vs SMU

I have to roll with the defending national champions in a title game.  Both teams have had great games this year as well as games were you wonder what the hell is going on.  I expect the winning culture at UCONN and the recent history of winning National Championships (2011 & 2014) to be the difference maker here.  

NHL PICKS

Florida +1.5 (-155) @ NY Rangers

The Rangers have been the hottest team in the NHL the past couple months.  They're right there at the top now and have been rolling.  Florida, surprisingly, is battling for a playoff spot now.  They have been winning against some good hockey teams and when they lose they rarely lose by more than 1.  The last part is what makes me like the spread today.  The Panthers really don't lose by more than 1 very often.

Boston @ Washington (-140)

Ovi and the Caps have been a force to be reckon with the second half of the season.  Boston comes into town looking to gain more ground in their pursuit of the Wings in the playoff race.  This should be a close game but the Caps at home is tough to bet against.

NCAA Picks

Thursday Night College Ball Bonanza

Since the NHL is on hiatus until after the AllStar game, I’m going to knock down some Cawledge Basketball picks.  In case you don’t remember the rules we established for picking college bball  games last year, I’ll give you the run through:  

• Start with the assumption that the home team has a legitimate chance of winning, upset or not.
• If the spread is outrageous stay away. 
• If the home team is given points take it.

#8 Notre Dame @ Virginia Tech +11(-115)

Apply rules 1 and 3.  Notre Dame is the road team, they have a high probability of winning but it certainly isn’t a guarantee.  Vtech hasn’t won a conference game yet this season (0-4 in the ACC) which says they suck but it also says they’re due.  Since it’s college basketball and 18 year olds are susceptible to crowd influence, I like Vtech plus the points.  11 points is a lot to give. 

Milwaukee +7(-115) @ Oakland 

Despite some personal ties I have with Oakland University I have to roll with the ‘Waukee pick in this one.  Oakland hasn’t exactly blown anyone out of the water yet this season and Milwaukee is pretty much on the same level.  I expect a close game with the score being within 5 at the end.

North Carolina State +5.5 (-110) @ Miami Florida

The Wolfpack take on South Beach tonight in a (not so) pivotal match up.  The U have lost a couple games this year at home to some weak ass teams if you ask me.  Green Bay and Eastern Kentucky are who I am referring to.  NC State plus the points here looks like a good bet to me.  I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Wolfpack comes away with a win.

#7 Arizona @ Stanford +4 (-115)

Once again Rules 1 & 3 apply.  Stanford isn’t ranked but they are 4-1 in the Pac12; the same record Arizona has in conference play.  I like Stanford to keep it close at home and probably lose by a point or two.  

#13 Maryland +1.5 (-110) @ #23 Indiana

Yep, I’m going against my own rules her.  I’m rolling with my gut feeling that Maryland is a good team that has done nothing but get better over the past month.  I’m not saying Indy doesn't have a chance, I’m just saying I think Maryland will win decisively.  I think Michigan State is better than Indiana and they got stomped out by the Terps last week.

Murray State @ Eastern Illinois +6 (-110)

Rules 1 & 3 apply once again.  Home team with a legitimate chance to win and given points.  ROLL IT!

Saint Mary’s +15 (-110) @ #3 Gonzaga

Going rogue against the rules!  Saint Mary’s hasn't lost a game by 15+ points at home or on the road in like a friggin decade.  There’s no way this half assed, over hyped Zags team is going to be the ones to do it.  Honestly, I smell upset city, but thats just me.  Regardless, no way Gonzaga beats Saint Mary’s by 15+. No way.

Bobby Catz Presents: Friday Meltdown Madness!!!

The final four is this weekend and in honor we decided to inject a little madness into our picks by rolling out our first ever moneyline madness! We have seven moneylines that are all guaruanteed victories and if you are feeling pretty confident throw them all in a parlay and win yourself a cool 20 grand or so.

DEN @ MEM (-470) (WINNER!) 

Same shit, different day here as the Grizz need a win and the Nuggets still suck. Look for a lot of Z-bo and the other Gasol as the Grizz pound away down low on the Nuggets and get a much needed win in their playoff chase.

ORL @ CHA (-543) (WINNER!)

I have a big crush on this Bobcats team. I think its because I am big fan of low post play and watching Al Jefferson is like popping in an instructional video on the subject. Also they have Kemba Walker who stole all of our hearts a few years back with his play in the Big East tournament and NCAA championship run. Look for this one to be a close game, but eventually the Catz will pull away for the victory. 

DET @ BKN (-575) (WINNER!)

Is there a franchise with a bleaker outlook than the Pistons right now? They are a terrible basketball team on the floor, in the front office and even in the stands (seriously people from Michigan suck). I have been going against this Nets team all season and of course because I am going with them now they will undoubtedly lose by 55 to the Pistons.

CLE (+111) @ ATL (L)

Danny Ferry the GM of the Hawks came out this week and said that being the 8th seed in the playoffs is not a goal of this Atlanta team. Concerns with that statement aside, this means that they are not that interested in winning these winnable games. The Cavs have been playing really well lately despite the fact that they are competing for absolutely nothing expect pride. Although the combination of Irving and Waiters has not been great this season, I am expecting big nights from each in a big win for the Cavs.

IND (+101) at TOR (L)

The Pacers have been a gambling nightmare all season long. They rarely cover spreads and look like they might not be the locks that everyone was expecting to make the eastern conference finals anymore. However, for some reason I like them against a very good Raptors team tonight. Look for Paul George to get out of a second half season slump and have a big night against the Rap Show.

DAL (-345) @ LAL (WINNER!)

Another must win game for a desperate playoff team with the number of remaning games rapidly dissapearing. In addition they are riding some momentum after getting a big win over the cross-town Clippers last night. Look for a big game from Dirk Diggler and for the Mavs to lead this one wire-to-wire.

OKC (+118) @ HOU (L)

The James Harden revenge game. The Rockets are favored in this game, I am assuming because the Thunder played a tough one last night against the Spurs. However, I think the big two of Westbrook and Durant will get up for this game and look to show up the Rockets as they continue to fight for that number one seed out west now that the Spurs look human again.

Elite 8 Teaser Time

Well our friend Sugar decided to pick against me for some dumb ass reason. Today we are going with another teaser, because we have serous issues over here and can't seem to get a single pick right in the basketball realm. Florida has been great this year. They play team ball, they're physical and they react well under pressure. Dayton on the other hand is riding a high comparable to Robert Downey Jr. in the 90's. They have nothing to lose and will come out firing. That's why (COUPLED WITH SUGAR'S STUPID FUCKIN IDEA TO RUIN MY ORIGINAL TEASER) I'm rolling with the under. You don't score on the Gators, especially when you're a team that plays Fordham and Richmond on the reg.

The Wisconsin-Arizona over is almost a no brainer. In their lat 5 games, the Badgers have put up 83, 75, 75, 85, 69. Zona has put up 69 or better in the tourney. Roll with it and watch as one very efficient offense, goes up against a team that can run the floor and score in bunches.

Now that we are really in what we would call the "meat and potatoes" portion of the tournament, it's time to start tossing some money around. Unfortunately for you, our erratic picks record has probably left you with little money to gamble with. So grab that solo cup full of coins, Chuck E. Cheese tokens and paper clips, head to Coin Star and check these bitches out:

First, let me point out that there are two teams from Michigan still in the tournament. Hopefully this points to signs of recovery for a State that has had no financial stability since the Dragon "Smaug" made his home somewhere in Detroit. Now, the Wolverines have some solid tourney experience, a smart coach, the classic white guy that is good in college, a pedigree player in Glen Robinson Jr and cool Unis. Take a look at Tennessee: They are not very good. That's it! We've watched Tennessee a few times this year. Yeah they have a couple pieces and have won a few games, but are they going to have a shot at the title? No way. We're rollin' with the team that named their University mascot after a Marvel character (fact).

Louisville and Kentucky will be a fun game to watch! For the first 5 minutes...If you are trying to convince me that the Harrison's are going to beat the best full court press, man to man defense in the country, then I've got a safe neighborhood in Detroit to take you to. The Harrisons will lose this game by themselves and Coach Calipari will force them to go to the NBA (Europe) so he never has to deal with them again.

As far as the Spartan's and Virginia go, I would rather not pick. Tony Bennett is a great coach, Tom Izzo is a great coach. They both play great team ball, they both scheme well defensively and they have both played in big games. All I can say is, this should be low scoring. Probably 65-61.

NCAA Madness Picks

Bob's Barely Legal College Picks

Dayton vs. Stanford under 133 (L)
Both of these teams have played several defensive battles so far in this tournament, and this one has potential to be a full blown defensive struggle. Stanford runs a nasty 2-3 zone that forces teams to settle for terrible jump shots and forced 3 pointers. I would not be surprised if the halftime score is 20-19 or something close like that. Expect a shitty, slow defensive battle as these team fight for the right to play in the elite eight.

Baylor vs. Wisconsin (-3.5) (WINNER!)
The Badgers are a crazy deep team that shoots the lights out from three. The Bears are an athletic, deep team that uses their length to deter teams from taking good shots. On paper this matchup favors the Bears, but Wisconsin is not the team that you want to take open looks for 40 minutes. The Badgers have five guys on the floor at all times that can shoot including first round pick Sam Dekker who is a versatile 3 that uses his size and shooting ability to get what he wants against opposing defenses. Look for a very deep and talented Wisconsin team to end the Bears miracle run as they move on to the Elite Eight.

After Sugar basically ran us into the ground the last two days with his NCAA March Madness picks, I thought I would chime in and try to right the ship with a few bangers of my own. After today, the only Madness we'll be talking about is you actually taking Sugar's advice the whole first round! heh heh...ok, time for the picks...

(9)Pitt vs (1)Florida ( -240 ) (WINNER!)

This picks is for a teaser or a parlay mainly. I'm thinking chalk rules the second round as the public starts to move heavily on the dogs. Florida is not a team to be fucked with as of late. Their senior leadership and dominant defense have been the key to their success all year, especially late in the season. Look for future NBA Hall of Famer Scottie Wilbekin to lead a balanced, sometimes boring offense for the Gators as they win a nice 60-54 contest against a shitty version of Syracuse. Pitt sucks against ranked teams and they're going to struggle with Florida's defense. Throw this in a parlay.

(7)Oregon vs (2)Wisconsin (OVER 145.5) (WINNER!)

While trying to come to a consensus on what games to pick for Saturday, Catz and I decided to go with Wisconsin (ML) as the official pick for this game. Well, Catz is asleep right now, and I feel like taking the over. In Oregon and Wisconsin, you have two of the NCAA's best offenses. Oregon is high scoring because they push the ball and have a great perimeter based attack. Their defense isn't great, but they do force turnovers. Wisconsin's offense is not as flashy as Oregon, but they are way more efficient and tend not to turn the ball over. The Badgers aren't afraid to push the ball either, but mainly, their players are looking for lay ins and open threes, not contested twos (as the Ducks tend to settle for). Everyone can take Catz's advice an go under with a Wisconsin win, or live on the wild side with me and stress out when the score is 32-21 at half tomorrow!

The Huskies may be tired after their hard fought OT victory over St. Joes. But I'd rather take a slightly tired UCONN team than an overrated Nova squad that can't shoot! Shabazz Napier has been here before. We all remember the bad ass, Kemba Walker fueled run through the Big East and to the title. Shabazz was there! Bob's Final Four Picks

Bracks on Bracks on Bracks

As the countdown for March Madness begins, there are a few things you can bank on every year at this time. Gonzaga will lose in either the first or second round; Michigan State will make a final four once in a four year span, and somebody will improve their draft stock so much that Michael Jordan will draft him top five.

Final Four

Duke
Talent usually wins out in the tournament. Duke has two of the five best players in the country including Jabari Parker who has really come into his own as of late. Coach K knows how grueling this tournament is and knows exactly what it takes to get this thing done. Do not be surprised if Duke gets hot and rides Parker all the way to the championship game.

Creighton
Douggie Buckets can really play some basketball. This is not a surprise to the writers at Dirtiest Picks, in fact we have him ranked as one of the ten best players in this draft class (check out the rest on next weeks article). His hot shooting could really take Creighton far in this tournament, and the road to get their is not nearly as tough as the other three teams listed.

Florida
Solid all around senior laden team. While none of their guys project to be stars at the NBA level this team can ball out and Coach Donovan has two titles already under his belt. Probably the safest bet of all the one seeds to make the final four and a definite threat to win it all.





Michigan State

Everyone knows by now that this Tom Izzo guy might be alright at coaching some bhoops. Given his reputation, the talent on this team and the fact that they are getting healthy at the right time and watch out!! You know he's gonna get you to the final four, but this State team has a legit chance of winning it all.

Darkhorses, Sleepers, and WSU

North Carolina
This NC team is weird. One night they look like a championship contender beating teams like Michigan State and Duke, the next they lose to Miami  and Wake Forest. However especially in the last few weeks they have been on quite a roll and any team unlucky enough to play them in the third or fourth round should be scared shitless.

OK State
Led by probable top ten pick Marcus Smart who has been playing out of his mind since he returned from his mid season suspension. They should be able to easily stomp out Gonzaga in the first round, followed up by a second round clash with Arizona. If they can score the upset over Arizona the road to the final four is clear and for the taking.

Kentucky
Do I legitimately believe the Catz have a chance of getting to the final four? Not unless the Harrison twins wake up Thursday morning and suddenly know how to play basketball. They are talented though, Julius Randal and James Young are easily the two best players on the team and Randal has shown at times that he's one of the best in the country. Could these two combine to upset the Wichita State Shockers in the second round? Absolutely, will it happen? Probably not.

Wichita State
The pick that no one believes in. Everyone expects the Shockers to lose either to Kentucky in the second round or soon thereafter. I however have a little faith in the Shockers. This is a team that reached the final four last year and was beating Louisville until the Cardinals put together one of the best all time runs to reach the title game. WSU is talented, experienced and deep; don't be surprised if they make a similar run to last year and reach the title game in North Texas.

After filling out my first bracket I looked back and realized I rarely stepped away from the chalk.  Being that this is March Madness and upsets are going to be abundant, I went back and took another look. My Final Four picks might end up being nothing more than a bunch of fucking nonsense or they might end up winning me a billion dollars; I really don’t fuckin know.

 But here they are nevertheless:

South

University of Florida Gators

Florida is the team who’s got the whole country on their dick.  They’re athletic, they play with a good tempo, they guard well, and they have a good coach; what’s not to like? The Gators face Albany in the first round; giving them a game to get any early tournament jitters out of their system before the real games start.  Next up Florida faces a real tournament team: Pittsburg.  Pitt is going to struggle to put up points against a team that guards as well as Florida.  It will be a much closer game but, inevitably Florida will be too much for Pitt to handle.  In the Sweet Sixteen the Gators will take on UCLA.  Yes, UCLA just won the PAC 12.  However, we here at Dirty Picks think the PAC 12 was garbage this year; a league who’s history and reputation weighed heavily on Selection Sunday.  In the Final Four play-in game Florida will take on the Lobos of New Mexico. It’s an Elite Eight matchup and a lot will be on the line.  New Mexico will have beaten Kansas and Syracuse on their way to this game.  “Defense wins championships” is how the saying goes; Florida’s defense will be the difference maker here and send the Gators onto Arlington as the Champion of the South.

East

Michigan State University Spartans

The Spartans struggled through the second half of their season and a lot of people jumped off their bandwagon because of it.  If you don’t already know, I am not one of those people.  I have been all about Sparty since day one.  In the first round MSU takes on the Blue Hens of Delaware.  Delaware has three players averaging 18+ ppg.  That’s a lot of scoring against a lot of shitty teams.  Michigan State will slow the game down and control the boards; ultimately leading to a first round win.  For the round of 32 Sparty will face the nerds from Harvard.  Harvard will be pumped after an upset victory against Cinci.  State’s veteran leadership will take control though and carry them on to week 2.  Look for Gary Harris to go off for 30 in this one.  Next up, Michigan State takes on the number one seed in the East: Virginia.  Virginia likes to slow things down and take their time.  They’re going to struggle to get the shots they want against Izzo’s defense and when they miss, Payne and Dawson will be there to control the boards.  Michigan State rolls in a close, low scoring game.  In the Elite Eight MSU takes on Iowa State.  By far the toughest game for the Spartans thus far.  Iowa State is athletic and plays with a very fast tempo.  They average 82.9 ppg but are lacking on defense.  Izzo’s style is tough defensive teams; this year has the potential to be his toughest.  Led by Appling, Payne, and Dawson the Spartans will put together a great defensive effort with few turnovers and deliberate offensive play; sending them down to Arlington for the Final Four as Champions of the East.

Midwest

University of Louisville Cardinals

First of all: why the fuck is Louisville a 4 seed? Are you going to tell me that Louisville, UCLA, and San Diego State (all 4 seeds) are on the same level? No! You sure as shit ain’t gunna say that.  Someone will Bertuzzi the fuck out of you.  I get why Michigan State is a 4 seed; they sucked it up the second half of the season.  But the Cardinals deserve better (12-1 in their last 13) and are going to make all the teams in their bracket pay for it.  First round Louisville faces Manhattan.  Manhattan should be playing another 4 seed worthy team such as UCLA or San Diego.  They’re not though; they’re playing Louis-fuckin-ville; the defending national champions.  Pitino’s gang is going to roll through Manhattan like Pitino rolled through hookers back when he could still get it up. In the round of 32 the real tourney starts for the Cardinals as they take on NC State.  NC State had to play in to the tourney by defeating Xavier.  They’re going to beat an overrated Saint Louis team in the first round and have their dreams crushed mercilessly by Louisville in the 2^nd round.  The Cards are 12-1 in their last 13 and average 82.2 ppg while holding opponents to 61 ppg. The little things will make the difference and in the end Louisville will be too much for NC State to handle.  Next up, the Cards take on Kentucky in the Sweet Sixteen.  Kentucky will be turning heads and making people talk by the round of 16.  Nevertheless, the young guns in Kentucky will fall to the more experienced and disciplined team: Louisville.  The Elite Eight will feature two of the NCAA’s greatest programs: Louisville vs Duke.  The Blue Devils will come into this game having only been truly tested once; against Michigan.  The rest of their games they will win with little trouble.  Coach K.’s and Pitino’s squads will square off in an epic match up with a Final Four slot on the line.  In the end I think it comes down to the fact that Louisville is not a fucking 4 seed. There is a solid argument to be made for them having a ONE seed; if not a one then a two.  But instead, they’re a four; the same seed as UCLA and SDSU. After sending Duke packing, they will ride on down to Arlington as Champion of the Midwest. 

West

Oklahoma State University Cowboys

OK State is an interesting team.  They were steadily climbing the AP Top 25, reaching as high as 9^th in the nation, until February.  At which time, leading scorer Marcus Smart decided he had heard just about enough from those fat white guys down there in Texas and needed to teach a lesson.  Well his “lesson” earned him a 3 game suspension and by the end of it the Cowboys were all but out of the Top 25 completely.  It’s tourney time though, and playing “smart” is the name of the game for Smart. OKState takes on Gonzaga in the first round.  For how small of a school and where they are located you really have to give the Zags credit.  They always seem to be in the tourney and not just slipping in at the last minute, but solidly in the tourney.  There’s a thousand small universities (one of them located just off I5 in Lacey, Wa) who would kill for a chance at any of the 64 spots in the tournament.  Yet these god damn Gonzaga fans take it for granted year after year, and already have passed off this year as another early exit.  For real though, Smart and the Cowboys are going to be too much for the Zags and will roll to the 2^nd round.  In the round of 32 OKState will face Arizona.  Arizona fans are going to be devastated; I am sure they have very high hopes for this year’s team.  They kind of got cheated though; the Cowboys aren’t a 9 seed when they have future NBA star Marcus Smart on the floor.  So: sorry Zona, but it’s going to be an early exit this year.  But Hey! You still live in Arizona so what the fuck are you whining about?  Next up, the Cowboys face San Diego State University.  SDSU is one of those teams that could fuck up some brackets.  I think after taking down Gonzaga and Arizona, the Cowboys will be a team on a mission.  More importantly, I think Marcus Smart will be on a mission; perceiving that with each upset he makes happen, his draft stock will rise. Cowboys win a close one and advance.  Elite Eight time: Oklahoma vs Wisconsin.  Two, polar opposite, schools take the court with Final Four glory on the line.  Everyone says Wisconsin is full of guys that are “very coachable” and they play “disciplined”; what are you all afraid of? They’re white, just say it.  I look at this game and I see it as this: a big time game where big time players step up.  Wisconsin just does not have the big time players to make it happen. Elite Eight; national TV; Final Four on the line; that’s not a situation where I’m feeling the coachable, disciplined white boys.  That’s a situation where we look back and say “Damn Marcus Smart fuckin went off”.  Oklahoma State goes on to Arlington and everyone wants to blow Marcus Smart.

So that’s it. Florida, Michigan State, Louisville, and Oklahoma State.

BJ's 2014 NCAA Tournament Final 4 Picks

Florida

Yeah, I'm not proud of this pick. It's an easy out and it probably won't happen because way too many squares will win money. But hey, I'm not picking Gator Nation to win the whole thing. I fully expect the best team in the nation to not face any real competition until the Elite 8. In fact, Florida should cruise straight through to the third round with solid veteran leadership and Billy Donovan at the helm. What I like about Florida is that they run 8 deep and play a grind it out, tough brand of basketball. Casey Prather and Scottie Wilbekin (both seniors) lead the Gators balanced Gators offense, which, honestly, is average at best. The Florida defense is where the magic happens. Donovan's squad only allows about 57.9 ppg, third best in the nation. Defense will carry in the tournament, so expect Florida to win big the first two rounds. If things get a little hairy in the later rounds, the Gators are experienced and well coached enough to pull out a win, as we saw in the SEC title game. Gator Nation is a lock for the Final Four!

Michigan St.

It's hard to count out the Spartans, especially when they're in a region with a bunch of overachievers (Virginia, Iowa St., Villanova) or tournament mainstays that aren't exactly living up to their reps (North Carolina, UCONN, Cincy Memphis). When you get down to it, Michigan St. and Virginia shouldn't have a problem dispatching these less talented teams to get to the Sweet 16. I believe that if these two do meet in the Sweet 16, Michigan St. will come away with a W. The Spartans have beat the best in the nation and played a schedule filled with tournament teams. When it comes to the Madness in March, big names count. Whether you're the Buckeyes with a Sullinger, Oden or Conley; Michigan with Tim Hardaway Jr and Glen Robinson; Kemba Walker and Kemba Walker's huge balls or just Jimmer, big names matter in the tournament. The Spartans have legit NBA talent on their team, led by sophomore guard, Gary Harris. State's leading scorer brings defensive chaos and solid free throw shooting (a must in the tournament, ask Derek Rose) to the table for Sparty and should stand out in key spots. Adreian Payne is a grinder down low who will bring hustle plays and energy to the Spartans. If you have any doubt about State, just look at Tom Izzo and slap yourself in the face. Izzo has his squad near the top of every statistical category and that is against an extremely competitive schedule. Take the Spartans and worry about the rest of your bracket. 

Creighton

That's fuckin right! Creighton is going to the Final Four! The Bluejays are going to use their filthy, disgusting, sticky, moist offense to bring the fire to this tournament. Creighton is ranked 23rd in ppg, 2nd in assists per game and 4th in field goal percentage. Most of this offense comes from Doug McDermott. Now believe you me, if you come with some weak ass defense against McDouble, he is going to fuck your shit up to the tune of 40 points. This tournament needs it's prototypical white guy that will never have this much basketball success again, and McDizzle will provide that. Creighton does not give a fuck on defense, so that will be an issue, but like I said, they don't have to play anyone good, so expect McDiscoballs to drop at least 35ppg before they reach the Final Four. Star player = Final Four and McDoubledick is THE star player this March.

Louisville

Apparently the defending champs are not a big deal or a sexy story because I have heard little to no coverage on the Flappy Birds this month. For a team that is 8th in ppg, 41st in rebonds per game, 19th in assists and 33rd in field goal pct. the Cardinals are not being taken seriously enough. We already know they have a dirty defense that only allows 61 ppg (15th best in the nation), but what else does the Pitino Platoon bring to the table? Well lets start with Russ Smith, the senior PG. Smith averages 18 ppg and shoots over 40% from three. He also has a penchant for hitting big shots, so expect huge things from Russdiculous this year in the tourney. Let's not forget about Louisville's beast of a big man, Montrezl Harrell. Not only does this future NBA bust have a sick rapper name, he can ball too! Harrell will provide the energy and toughness needed when the going gets tough later in the tournament. Don't sleep on Louisville this year. They've been here before, they have the players and their coach is still trying to separate himself from an embarrassing sex scandal. The Cardinals are a lock for the Final Four.

Sugar’s “My Maple Syrup Tastes Like Jack Daniels: Day 3” Picks

#13 Michigan State (+2.5) @  #20 Michigan (L)

The last time these two teams met, the Wolverines walked away with a 5 point victory in hostile territory.  Tomorrow, the Spartans look to return the favor to their in-state rival.  The Michigan Wolverines have had the week off after a tough loss at home to Wisconsin a week ago.  In the meantime, Tom Izzo and the boys went down to Purdue and put on a 3 point clinic this past Thursday. 

To the casual fan this rivalry is viewed as Big brother (UofM) vs Little Brother (MSU).  However, if you know, essentially, anything about college sports in Michigan you know that those days are over. Michigan State has dominated the Wolverines the past five years in the two sports that dominate our mainstream sports media: football and basketball.  If you are one of those few remaining “Maze and Blue; through and through” fans, well.. fuck off.  You’re a moron.  Michigan basketball hasn’t won shit, ever.  The only games you guys have won that mean anything have been taken off your record because you were cheating... and you couldn’t even win a championship then. Pathetic if you ask me. 

The Spartans head into Ann Arbor tomorrow playing for keeps.  This is a team with starters that have been tournament tested and tried; Anything but a Final Four appearance this year for this group of athletes will be considered a failure.  The Wolverines, on the other hand, are merely hoping to do well in the tournament.   

Tom Izzo will have his guys ready to go tomorrow.  This game features two possible final four teams. More than that, this game is a test for both to see where they stand when it comes to a must win situation.  Look for Izzo and the Spartans to roll against the Wolverines.  If they don’t, well don’t fuckin blame me. I’ll be too busy drowning my sorrows in Jack Daniels.. I mean Maple Syrup.

Arizona @ Colorado (+4.5) (L)

The last time we bet Arizona, the "basketball players" from Utah went completely flaccid against the Wildcats and ruined our night. Not to worry. I am here to once again bet against Arizona's mediocrity. College Game Day is in town, the Buffs just beat Arizona St. (who beat the Cats) and have won 5 of their last 6 conference games, and have just 1 home loss. Arizona has not been consistent since they lost Brandon Ashley earlier in the season. Colorado will jump all over them to start the game, lose the lead and come back in the end to cover the spread (which will result in a court storming somehow...). Take the BUFFS!!!

Sugar’s “My Maple Syrup Tastes Like Jack Daniels” College Picks

#11 Louisville @  #7 Cincinnati (+3.5) (WINNER!)

Cincinnati has yet to lose at home this season.  Furthermore, on January 30^th they went into Louisville and beat the Cardinals 69-66.  If you haven’t heard, the new motto around here for college ball is “take the home team."  The Bearcats are 17-1 in their last 18 games; winning those 17 games by an average of 12.6 points.  Louisville is a good team, as always, that has been successful on the road this year with only 1 road loss.  However, after nailing yesterday's picks, I’m feeling Cinci on this one. If they don’t win, expect a close loss that will cover.
